In Highbury, we have been revisiting our long runn

In Highbury, we have been revisiting our long running theme, traditional tales.

Exploring classic tales and much loved favourites with the children gives rise to lots of activities, stimuli and discussion which supports communication and language as well as literacy. It also gives children a chance to creatively explore themes and concepts and develop their own ideas about characters and story lines.

It is a great way for children to retell stories in their own words, building confidence, as well as a really powerful tool to explore big emotions by discussing how characters might be feeling, whilst acknowledging this isn't 'the real world'.

It's also lots of fun to find new and ever more creative ways to explore those old classics!

Our Highgate Quiet Room children have been learnin

Our Highgate Quiet Room children have been learning all about our planet. They read 'In The Forest' by A.Boisrobert and L. Rigaud, about deforestation and the importance of planting new trees to support the habitat, 'Captain Green and the Tree Machine' by E.Bookless and D.Deeptown about his gadget to help save the planet and '10 things I can do to help my world' by M.Walsh about the simple things even the youngest residents of planet earth can do to help.

We discussed planting trees & plants in our garden, and how worms help create compost as a natural way to improve soil. We found lots in our trough in the garden and decided to start our very own wormery!

Discussions on deforestation helped develop an understanding of their world, in particular how paper comes from trees, which led to practitioners asking if children would like to try making their own paper. They collected recycled paper from the shredders in the office, made a papier mâché paste (which "felt like porridge!") and placed the mix on our fine mesh screens and squeezed the water out with towels. We left the paper overnight to see if it would set! We also painted our own forest, with every child making their own tree.

Children also learnt about endangered animals, and the different habitats and environments animals live in. We played board games such as "Where do I live", an animals of the world matching game, and talked about why we have to protect animals.

The children also learnt the makaton signs for Lois Armstrong's song 'What a wonderful World', which they have enjoyed singing during circle time.

Christine, our Quiet Room Senior, then told the children about Sir David Attenborough and the work he has done to help educate people about the world around them, and the animals who live in it. She wrote to him outlining all the children's projects, and letting him know how we are having important discussions with the children about protecting our planet for the future.......and he only went and wrote back to us! What a legend!

We have been baking and cooking lots in both nurse

We have been baking and cooking lots in both nurseries over the past few months!

In Highgate children of all ages, from our baby room through to our preschool room, have been making their own breadsticks with fresh rosemary, parsley and thyme, bread rolls, vegan banana bread and dairy and sugar free biscuits, as well as 'make your own wraps' becoming a permanent fixture on our menu.

In Highbury, our baby room have been making cheesy biscuits, and our older Yellow, Green and Quiet rooms have been making banana muffins, fresh rosemary bread and porridge.

Cooking is a great way to involve children in their own health and self care, promote healthy eating and give children more control over what they choose to eat. We find even picky eaters are much more likely to try new food if they are involved in preparing, making and serving it. We encourage all children to participate in cooking as well as helping to serve lunch and tea, water and fruit and vegetables at snack times.

Baking is also a great way to include maths, extend vocabulary, and start conversations about hypotheses: "what do you think will happen when we add more water" counting: "we need four heaped spoons of flour, let's count together", addition: "we need 10 raisins and have added 8 so far, how many more do we need to add?" comparisons: "which batch is bigger/smaller?" measuring: "let's weigh the herbs, we need the scales to say 15g" and "let's fill the jug half full, and empty it into that bowl" and exploring patterns and shapes "what shapes shall we cut our biscuits into?"

Baking is challenging and gives children the opportunity to persist with difficulty, work together, develop fine and gross motor skills when mixing, moulding, cutting and kneading, as well as creating their own recipes and most importantly, to have fun with their friends!

World Book Day, 4th March 2021! Next Thursday we

World Book Day, 4th March 2021!

Next Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day in Nursery! We invite all of our children (and their adults, as well as our team) to come in dressed as their favourite literary character or book.

Thanks to National Book Tokens (who distribute over 15 million tokens a year) and countless lovely book publishers and book sellers, lots of books are reduced to £1. We also have £1 book tokens for all our children which we will give out to our families next week.

There are also loads of wonderful activites and online events so head over to the World Book Day website for more information.

Today in nursery we celebrated Shrove Tuesday, mor

Today in nursery we celebrated Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as pancake day!

We talked a little about the traditional feast day as well as incorporating it into our play.

We made a pancake messy play tray giving the children an opportunity to play with and measure the ingredients, role play with their own frying pans, bags of flour and egg shells in egg boxes (all thoroughly washed!).

Children drew their own pancakes and practised their fine motor skills by cutting them out. Cardboard boxes were transformed into plates and adorned with toppings giving us an opportunity to discuss healthy food choices with children such as different types of fruit we could use to make 'sweet' pancakes.

The older children cooked their own pancakes in the Quiet Room on a hot plate and the whole nursery enjoyed pancakes for afternoon snack in Highbury and tea in Highgate!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Xīnnián hǎo 新年好

Today in nursery we celebrated the Lunar New Year. We learnt about how in the Chinese Zodiac, 2021 is the year of the Ox.

Today marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars traditional to many east Asian countries including China, South Korea, and Vietnam, which are regulated by the cycles of the moon and sun.

We celebrated with our nursery family and had lots of fun learning about different traditions. Have a look at what we've been up to!

We looked at Hanzi, Chinese characters, gave the children different ingredients to role play making their own celebratory meals, made hats and lanterns, drew dragons and even made Ox pictures with junk modelling and painting.
